The preceding flag was pink and gold, the normal colours of the city of Rome. The 1808 flag was obviously not that of Vatican City, which did not come into existence until finally 1929. St. Peter’s importance as the primary pope is even further emphasized by the fact that he was martyred for his religion. Tradition retains that he was crucified
